Families Outside National Conference 2022

Hidden in Plain Sight: The Cost of Imprisonment to Families

Families Outside hosted our ‘Hidden in Plain Sight’ conference this year at The Studio in Glasgow on 16th November 2022. We were delighted to have 158 delegates join us on the day, covering a wide range of backgrounds and experiences.

We also had an amazing list of contributors on the day, including family members affected by imprisonment, sharing their own personal experiences and expertise on the subject matters. You can click here to see the amazing line up

The conference provided the opportunity to highlight families affected by imprisonment who are hidden in plain sight and to whom the cost of imprisonment is significant. We explored various costs to families throughout the day, including the cost to their human rights, the emotional and social cost, the cost to children and young people, the financial cost and the health cost.

Delegates throughout the day were also encouraged to think about what they could do to take action to improve outcomes for children and families affected by imprisonment.

The post conference evaluation showed that 96% of people attending committed, that they would do something differently as a result of attending the conference.

Here is what some had to say:

“I am far better informed and have next steps to work on”

“Very interesting insights, many of which I haven’t considered in my work with families”
