Who is this training for?

Families Outside’s training modules are for any professional who may have the opportunity to support families affected by imprisonment in their role.

Modules 1 and 2 will be delivered via Microsoft Teams, and Module 3 will take place at HMP Barlinnie. This will give attendees an insight into the experience for children and families when they visit a family member in prison. As a result, professionals will feel more confident in supporting families. The session will include an opportunity to:

  • Experience the security procedure involved when visiting someone in a Scottish prison
  • See first-hand the visits area and what supports are available here for children and families
  • Hear from a range of prison-based staff about their role and how they support families affected by imprisonment

All three modules will include practical ways in which professionals can help families affected by imprisonment, and will aim to meet the following objectives:

  • Understand the impact imprisonment has on the whole family in order to reduce stigma and social isolation
  • Improve the overall experience for families including children and young people, navigating through the criminal justice process from arrest to release

Important Information:

As Module 3 takes place inside a prison, participants must arrive by the specified time. Due to Module 3 taking place within a prison, places are non-transferrable – if the registered attendee is no longer able to attend, please contact [email protected]

Participants must bring photographic ID (e.g. driver’s licence or passport) and are asked not to bring mobile phones or any other electronic equipment into the prison. There are lockers available for items such as coats, bags and car keys (lockers require a £1 deposit).
