The cost to families of imprisonment and release to be debated in the Scottish Parliament
Rona Mackay, SNP MSP, recently submitted a motion in the Scottish Parliament highlighting the cost to families of imprisonment and release. Having received considerable cross-party support, the motion is now set to be debated in the Scottish Parliament on Tuesday 7th March 2023.
The motion highlights the findings of the ‘Paying the Price’ report launched by Families Outside last year and notes the “role of prison in creating, sustaining and deepening poverty amongst children and families”. This debate will serve to shine a much needed light on the serious financial consequences for children and families associated with imprisonment.
Families Outside is pleased to have produced a briefing to support Members in preparing for tomorrow’s debate, and looks forward to working with Members after the debate to ensure urgent action is taken to support children and families affected by the devastating financial impacts of imprisonment.
Follow the debate live on Scottish Parliament TV, Tuesday 7th March just after 5pm.
