Ministerial Statement on the United Nations Charter on the Rights of the Child

On 20th November 2019 the Deputy First Minister, John Swinney MSP, made a Ministerial Statement to Parliament on the 30th anniversary of the United Nations Charter on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC).

In his statement, the Deputy First Minister confirmed that he would introduce a Bill to Parliament that will incorporate the UNCRC in to legislation next year. This is one of a number of measures the Scottish Government is taking to strengthen the rights of children in Scotland.

The UNCRC is the most comprehensive statement on children’s rights across the world. Incorporating the Articles in to Scots Law will ensure that children’s rights are enhanced protected in Scotland.

Families Outside is supportive of the Scottish Government’s proposals. We look forward to working with the Scottish Government and other organisations on incorporating the UNCRC into Scots Law. We will take a particular focus on ensuring that children affected by imprisonment are consulted, considered and included in the proposals and that all public bodies across Scotland protect the rights of the 20,000 – 27,000 children affected by imprisonment every year.
