Family Event 2024

On Saturday 8th June 2024, Families Outside, the only national charity that works solely on behalf of families in Scotland affected by imprisonment, will be hosting Stronger Together: a free event for and with families affected by imprisonment. So that we get the content of the day just right, we’ve been working with our family planners to design the event and we hope that, in attending, you will feel more connected to other family members, learn more about support and opportunities for families affected by imprisonment, and have some fun!

We’d like to emphasise that our definition of families is broad. It includes those with and without children and those who may not be a blood relation but are still affected in some way. All individuals of any age, background, or circumstance affected by someone’s imprisonment will be welcome to attend. This is regardless of whether you are in contact with the person in prison.

If you have been affected by another person’s imprisonment in Scotland, this event is for you.

As well as meeting other families, there will be opportunities to engage with the wider Families Outside staff team and a select few professionals who will be there by invitation only.

When: Saturday 8th June 10am – 3:30pm

Where: Technology and Innovation Centre, Glasgow

Frequently asked questions:

What can I expect on the day?
  • Families can expect a warm welcome and an opportunity to take part in a range of fun and interesting sessions and activities. There will also be a chance to connect with others walking through similar experiences, which we hope will leave you feeling positive, uplifted and supported.
Is the venue accessible?
  • There is step free access into the building and throughout via lifts. There are also facilities including a gender neutral toilet and a breastfeeding room that we hope will make it easier for family members to participate in the day.
Who will be there?
  • Stronger Together is for families who have been impacted by the imprisonment of a family member. You will also see some friendly familiar faces from Families Outside who will be guiding the event throughout the day. Although this event isn’t open to all agencies and professionals, there will be a small number of key partners on the day who have been invited to contribute and support specific areas of the event.
What about kids?
  • Stronger Together is for everyone affected by imprisonment, so if you have children (of any age) impacted by the imprisonment of a family member, we would love to welcome them! We won’t be providing childcare on the day, but there will be lots for the kids to explore and do!
I feel nervous about travelling – how do I get there?
  • Our venue is in a very central location in Glasgow, and a short walk from the main Glasgow train stations, Buchanan Street Subway station, and Buchanan bus station. We don’t want travel to be an obstacle for you attending, so please email us at [email protected] or call our freephone helpline on 0800 254 0088 if you have any questions or concerns and we can discuss ways in which we can help!
How much does the event cost?
  • There is no cost for this event and the lunch and other refreshments on the day will be completely free for everyone. However, we do understand that travelling to an event like this can be costly. If you think this might make it difficult for you to attend, please email us at [email protected] or call our freephone helpline on 0800 254 0088 and we can discuss ways in which we can help!
Will people be taking photographs or sharing things on social media on the day?
  • We understand the importance of creating a safe space for families to meet and join in the day in ways which don’t compromise your privacy or comfort. Our communications team will have full control of this side of things on the day and will be very discreet and sensitive around any content that we share about the day. We will seek consent from everyone in attendance before sharing anything, it’s important to know that you have the right to say no.
Are people going to ask me to share things about my personal experience?
  • Being able to share our experiences with others is a great way to feel empowered as well as support others who are walking through similar circumstances. However, none of the sessions will be designed to put you on the spot, and we won’t expect anyone to share anything that would make them feel uncomfortable.
What if I feel overwhelmed on the day?
  • Stronger Together is intended to be positive, uplifting and fun, but we know that attending an event like this might bring a lot of feelings to the surface. Our skilled and knowledgeable Families Outside teams will be on hand to answer any questions and provide any emotional support should you need it on the day- you are in very safe hands!
