Bespoke Training for Girlguiding Scotland

Earlier this year, Families Outside Training & Development Manager, Rebecca Joyce, and Training & Events Coordinator, Jazmine Bennett, collaborated with the Generation Cashback Project at Girlguiding Scotland to deliver a bespoke training session to meet the unique needs of their organisation.

The Generation CashBack project at Girlguiding Scotland supports groups across Scotland in areas of deprivation, or where girls in the units (groups) have been affected by trauma.

Anna Thomas, Development Officer, Generation Cashback Project at Girlguiding Scotland, had previously attended Families Outside’s three CPD-accredited training modules.

Anna reached out to Families Outside to request delivery of a bespoke training session for Girlguiding Leaders. Anna wanted the training to focus on some of the most common issues that children with a family member in prison experience and how to support them in an age appropriate way.

After the two-hour session, Anna shared the following reflections:

Girlguiding Scotland welcomes girls from any background or situation, including girls who have a family member in prison. I originally took part in the training because I work directly with around 150 girls a year, so I wanted to be ready to support any young person I met.

After attending the training, I realised it would be a great fit for some of the leaders that I work with. I also felt that the training offered a new perspective on inclusion, which fits in with the inclusion strand of Girlguiding’s strategy. [As a result of this,] I asked Families Outside to create a bespoke, shorter session for our leaders.

Collaborating with Families Outside worked well. It was really valuable to have their expertise. The content of the training was highly specialised – it would not have been possible for our existing staff team to deliver the training content with the same authority or level of understanding.

The training highlighted a number of wider inclusion issues and intersectionalities that young people with a family member in prison might be facing.

We hope that the 5 leaders who attended will be able to consider a new way to be inclusive and will be able to support any girls in their units with a family member in the justice system, present or future.”

We would like to extend our thanks for Anna, Generation Cashback, and everyone at Girlguiding Scotland for their commitment to improving outcomes for families affected by imprisonment.
