Kaye Adams Show – Vox Liminis
Throughout 2014 Families Outside, in partnership with Vox Liminis and HMP Addiewell, provided singing and music making courses, each comprising of workshops which brought together imprisoned fathers (or other close family members), children, and carers. Using a family learning approach, the courses was participatory and gave families an opportunity to create, perform, and record music. This culminated in a concert to which other prisoners, prison staff, and family members, were invited. At the end of the project each child and imprisoned adult received a CD of their musical creations.
Led by experienced musicians from Vox Liminis, as well the prison’s own music tutor, the courses gave children and adults an opportunity to work creatively together and enabled participants of all ages to grow in confidence and have fun together. Family led in its approach, each family group took ownership of their own material and as such were involved at all stages of the project.
This project had a lasting impact on imprisoned men and associated children; children felt they were not alone in being affected by imprisonment, feeling closer to their imprisoned family member.
With the success of the project at Addiewell, the project moved on to other prison establishments including HMP Barlinnie in Glasgow. With the success of the project at cementing family ties, it featured on the BBC’s Kay Adams show.
